Written by Sandra Kelley. (John 3:16)
This poem was written to all my African American sisters in recognition of Black History month.
How many times have you been told you're not smart enough, you're not tall enough, your skin is not bright enough, your hair is not straight enough....for them.
Perhaps you've experienced folks smirking at you, as your vivacious God-made large silhouette graciously filled the room.
Or maybe you feel ostracized by other folks, because they've judged your level of intelligence by how you spoke, when it's merely the dialectics of your speech that reflects the heritage of your folks.
If we put too much weight on how people view us, we will make the mistake and forget about how much God values us. Read John 3:16. If God sent His Only Begotten Son to die for you so that you can have eternal life; Black Girl don't you feel like you are enough?
When you really begin to understand your value to God and stop tripping because people think you're odd...then, what people say or think about you will be like water on a duck's back.
Black Girl, you are enough in God's eyes.
So live like it. Talk like it.
Be about it. Don't just talk about.
Change what you can if you can. But don't change to please people. Change to please God and NOT man.
